The joint 420/470 Swiss Championship begins today on Lake Thoune.
Favorites among the 23 470 teams are the Olympians Linda Fahrni/Maja Siegenthaler TYC, sailing the first regatta after the Olympics on their home waters.
Main challengers will be the development teams Philippe Erni/Stephan Zurfluh SCC, David Biedermann/Max Haenssler BT or Kilian Wagen/Anne-Sophie Thilo CNP. The veteran, 1984 IYRU (now WS) Youth Sailing World Champion Stefan Seger RCO, together with Matthias Fahrni RCO, will probably also have a say.
27 teams will start in the 420s with Maxime Bachelin/Arno de Planta CVV as key favorites. Considered first challengers are Morgan Lauber/Léo Tetaz CNM and Nick Zeltner/Till Seger RCO. The overcast sky until next Saturday will inhibit the Lake Thoune thermal breeze.
A Southwind ('Foehn') has been forecast for today, and a westerly front is expected for the rest of the week.
Finnish sailing yacht specialist Baltic Yachts has delivered its latest sailing superyacht, the Baltic 130 Custom, which has been named My Song.
The 39.62 metre yacht features Nauta Design exteriors with hull lines by Reichel-Pugh naval architects. The interior includes five cabins that were also styled by Nauta Design and the project was managed by Nigel Ingram of MCM.
Built from a carbon-fibre sandwich construction, this single-masted yacht features a plumb bow and a wide stern, as specified by the new owner, who is a keen regatta sailor. The layout comprises a full-beam master suite forward, two en-suite guest cabins, a studio that can be converted into an additional guest cabin when needed, three crew cabins, cockpit, saloon and galley.
Henry Hawkins, CEO of Baltic Yachts, said, “Our reputation for precision building in lightweight carbon with every component weighed and factored into the design has enabled displacement to be kept to the 105-tonne target providing the ideal platform for a high performance cruiser/racer.
Baltic Yachts add that My Song was designed to have an average cruising speed of 16.5 knots and a maximum speed of 30 knots when set up for regatta racing. The Southern Spars all-carbon rig allows My Song to set a pin head mainsail for cruising or a square-top for racing, with the switch-out between the two North Sails set-ups taking just three hours to effect.
Auxiliary power comes from a single Caterpillar 8.7 diesel engine, which drives a retractable propeller that can be turned through 90 degrees to drive the yacht away from its berth. What's more, My Song's lifting keel allows the draft to be reduced from seven metres to 4.8 metres. Mario Pedol of Nauta Design added, “The team designed and engineered the deck, interior and hull for top performance with no compromise on comfort or aesthetics using lightweight materials and innovative construction methods.
The owner is both a very experienced yachtsman and a very loyal client and friend. All of us are very happy with My Song.”
Other sailing yacht projects currently under development at the Finnish yard include the 53.9 metre Baltic 175, which will be called Pink Gin VI when it is launched in 2017.
