The 8 boats' fleet at the Barcelona World Race made good progress during the past 24 hours.
The leading yachts are already in the approach to the Gibraltar Strait to be passed during the day. Alex Thomson GBR/Pepe Ribes ESP on 'Hugo Boss' are still leading 8 miles ahead of Bernard Stamm SUI/Jean Le Cam FRA. Guillermo Altadill ESP/José Munoz CHI on 'Neutrogena' are new on rank 3 with a 14 miles' backlog on the leader. The last boats are actually in a calm zone and Nandor Fa HUN/Conrad Coleman GBR on rank 8 sailing at a speed of 1,7 kn only are already over 100 miles behind.
Yesterday, the smaller yachts arrived in Hobart in short intervals, and this morning UTC, already 35 teams had crossed the finish line.
While the leading super-maxis were forced to traverse the Bass Street in light winds, the main part of the fleet benefitted from an upcoming North-East wind of up to 30 kn pushing them on a direct route under spi towards the arrival. In calculated (IRC) time, the smaller and elder yachts are therefore far ahead in the rankings and the final positions have not yet been decided. The line honours went once more to 'Wild Oats XI', ahead of the other 100-footers 'Comanche', 'Ragamuffin' and 'Rio 100'. The Volvo 70 'Black Jack' follows on rank 5 in the overall list of arrivals.
